PLAYLIST
Hello, my name is Selene Kallan and I’m a dyslexic fantasy author. Today, I’ll share some of my favorite songs with you.
I can’t write a book without the perfect music. What makes a song perfect for me? It’s hard to say. Sometimes it feels as if one of my characters is singing because the lyrics are incredibly attuned to what they’re feeling. Others it’s more about the beat. Most match both conditions. My favorite genres are symphonic metal, rock, and pop. My playlists are an eclectic mix of all.
For HUNTRESS PREY, my urban fantasy romance novel, it’s mostly rock, I believe.
The ones with more oomph, are usually those that fit Valentine better. She’s a cat momma vampiress with anxiety. Evanescence’s music fits her a lot.
I can totally imagine Axel loving Delain. Their music has that ethereal, melancholy quality that absolutely fits an exiled fae prince who hides his emotions behind mountains of sass.

Some of these songs I listened to over and over while writing certain scenes.
Hunting Grounds by In This Moment was absolutely perfect for the end of Chapter 4 and beginning of Chapter 5 because that’s when Axel and Valentine have their fight scene. Especially this bit:
I can hear your heart pound – You don’t think I’m a threat
Like a predator sink my teeth into your neck
Because let’s just say Valentine’s fangs get very close to Axel’s neck.
Can’t Pretend by Tom Odell fits both Axel and Valentine so well. Both are jaded, and broken in similar ways and their carefully built barriers just crash down when they get to know each other.
Love, I have wounds
Only you can mend
Trials by Starset is just ahhh!
These trials make us who we are, who we are we are
We’re motivated by the scars
That we’re made of
For me, it evokes that mix of melancholy, and reluctant acceptance that both Axel and Valentine often feel around each other.
