What is on your nightstand?
I’m the sort of person who likes to read three books at once so I can pick up the one that suits my mood, though it’s nearly always “book club” fiction! Right now, here’s my stack: Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano, which I’ve been meaning to read for ages and have finally started; In Five Years by Rebecca Serle, which is a quick-moving “easy” read for me; and The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, which I’m reading much more slowly to savor and learn something new.
What author would you totally fan?
Only one? I have so many! I have mad crushes on Jenna Blum, Elizabeth Berg, and Anne Tyler, but I also adore Janice Y.K. Lee for The Piano Teacher and Emily Ruskovich for Idaho.
What makes you cringe?
As a writer, I cringe when I reread something I’ve written that I thought was utterly brilliant and profound, but now see for what it is: pretentious. It happens much less often now, but there are still times when I catch myself trying too hard to be “meaningful.” I’m cringing right now, just thinking about it!
Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I’m somewhere in-between. I have a general outline, with key plot points (major scenes) and notes about what leads up to each turning point and what happens as a consequence. But the outline always grows and unfolds and evolves as I work, which is where the “flow” part happens. At a certain point, I get into that immersive space where the characters take over, and I have to listen to they’re telling me.!
Is there a word you love to use?
I wouldn’t say that I have any favorite words, although I do love words that convey both sensation and feeling. For example, linger. There’s no other word that evokes exactly what linger evokes! I’m always looking for words like that.
