‘Incredibly insightful, funny and poignant’ Helen Sedgwick

I get up. I go to work. I spend the whole day waiting for the words on my screen to make sense. In the commuter broth of the carriage home, tears run in hot lines to my jaw and for a minute or so, I let them.

Nothing has turned out quite how Rhona Beech thought: she’s been swapping one so-so job for another on an annual basis . . . and now her nine-year relationship has ended abruptly. When her lukewarm efforts to adjust to the changes in her life are thrown entirely up in the air by some unwelcome news, Rhona has to think again.

Her sardonic, funny, poignant attempts to find an answer to the questions she’s facing are helped by a cast of friends, strangers and trained professionals. Funny and tender, Keep Walking, Rhona Beech is a beautifully written and brilliantly observant satire on relationships, friendship and life

Previously published as Head for the Edge, Keep Walking by Cargo Publishing.

INTERVIEW

  1. What is on your nightstand?

An airport purchase from the Penguin Classics series; Another Country by James Baldwin (stunning writing craft). And an early ’90s poetry anthology from a French secondhand bookshop (with a written inscription, ‘For Meg with love from Caroline Beatrice, November 1993’, which is more intriguing than the poetry!). Poetry is ideal for travelling because a slim book weighs less and the contents can’t be rushed.

  1. What author would you totally fan?

In a class during my Masters course we were asked to write a page in the voice of another writer, and I remember trying Jim Dodge because someone had given me his unique little book, Fup, about the duck and the old guy. But, which authors have created characters that I imagine having a life beyond the end of the books? So, so many. Sylvia Plath’s Esther Greenwood springs to mind. Or Anne of Green Gables. Or Charlie from Flowers for Algernon. A long list.

  1. What makes you cringe?

When I see the word ‘mewl’ in a poem. My skin is shivering having to type that, argh eugh blurgh! Certain words are fashionable every two or three years (like ‘cartography’ was a popular word-image for a while) but when ‘mewl’ was trending it creeped me out every time I saw it.

  1. Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?

Mostly I go with the flow and then when I’m editing I wish I’d plotted ‘the flow’ a little more before typing it…!

  1. Is there a word you love to use?

I don’t love to use it, more like, I’ve got no control over using it – when I’m reading through a first draft I take out the word ‘just’ from just about every paragraph! It ends up everywhere, in prose and dialogue, serving no purpose. I must have a blind spot for it.
