Melanie Mendez of Clan Kale isn’t sure if she believes in angels, but she’s pretty sure she’s not a descendant of one.
Her grandmother, the Elder of Clan Kale, would beg to differ. Her brothers, Victor and Gabe, would tell her to shut up about it and just do what she’s supposed to do: fight. Specifically, they want her to follow The Ways by participating in the Agora–the annual gathering where the seven clans compete for honor.
But Mel has never been one for competition, and the other clans have started to take notice. When she narrowly avoids being killed by a mysterious man the night before the Agora, she can’t help but wonder if the other clans have judged her according to The Ways: as a traitor.
One way or another, this Agora is about to turn deadly.

INTERVIEW
- What is on your nightstand?
THE WHEEL OF OSHEIM by Martin Lawrence. I’ve read books 1 and 2 of the Red Queen’s War and enjoyed both. I really enjoy reading about Jal, even though he is a squirmy coward.
- What author would you totally fan?
J.K. Rowling of course! I love Harry Potter, and I’m a diehard Hufflepuff. I even know what my Patronus is, but I’m not going to say because it’s so small and cute. I really wish it was a large, ferocious animal.
- What makes you cringe?
A female character that always needs saving. Especially if she needs a man to save her. I prefer strong and interesting female leads that aren’t afraid of adversity.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
For DARK SUN RISING, I really went with the flow, but I know as I continue writing the series the overall arc is going to get more expansive, and thus need more thorough planning.
- Is there a word you love to use?
Does the F bomb count? My characters drop it all the time. Actually, they drop a lot of curse words.
Other than profanity, I really enjoy writing about when a character is horrified. But I also have an aversion of using words repetitiously. I usually end up trying to find other ways to convey when a character is experiencing horror.
