- What is on your nightstand?
Water, my Fit bit charger, scraps of paper and a pen for writing down dreams, and a copy of Portland: City of Weird. I love short stories before bed.
- What author would you totally fan?
Joe Hill. I relish his work SO much and would love the chance to talk process and craft with him. I want to write endings that leave a reader breathless for ten chapters!
- What makes you cringe?
People who chew with their mouths full. Also worms that turn out to be snakes. In my snaky new home in the south, this is a common occurrence. I’ll be out for my daily walk, dodging squished worms, and one of them will turn out not to be dead…or a worm. (What’s also weird about baby snakes is that they are not cute in baby form like other animals. They don’t have bigger eyes or chubby cheeks. They’re just snakes…but small. *cringe*)
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I’m a middle-of-the road writer. I map out a rough outline, but give myself freedom to veer off course if a more interesting avenue presents itself while I’m writing. With world-building backstory for fantasy, however, I am pretty obsessive. Even if it never ends up in the text, I want to know every single tiny detail about this alternate universe. I spent months building the world for Unleashed before I wrote a single word on my outline or the manuscript itself.
- Is there a word you love to use?
I love all the words, even the grimy creepy ones. I do get a special thrill, however, when I work a word into a manuscript that I don’t get to use often in everyday life. It’s like setting the table with the good China. (Or I imagine it’s like that. I don’t have China, lol!)
