Of all the codes they teach us… those of duty, honor, trust, loyalty… none ever speak of love.
The story is well-known. A Lorcan princess, who died at the hands of a wicked prince. And the captain, whose quest for vengeance knew no bounds.
But what if her death had been an elaborate plot?
Instead of murder, Princess Liza is taken captive by the cruel-hearted Prince Nicholi, with the reluctant assistance of Captain Erik, of the Muir Court Guard. Focused entirely on his own aspirations, the prince demands Liza consent to become his rose bride, which would place both her eternal soul, and her kingdom, in his pitiless gasp.
As the prince awaits his answer with withering patience, Liza’s only comfort comes in a guarded friendship with the Muir captain; a man torn between obeying the sacred vows of knighthood and his desire to protect the princess he has come to love.
Enraged beyond reason when discovering Erik’s devotion to the woman he considers his property, Nicholi forces Liza to make an impossible choice.

- What is on your nightstand?
My watch, a lamp, a mouse catnip toy, my signed copy of Ramses the Damned: The Passion of Cleopatra by Anne and Christopher Rice and a copy of Antony and Cleopatra by Adrian Goldsworthy.
- What author would you totally fan?
Anne Rice, author of The Vampire Chronicles. I’ve had several opportunities to meet her and each has been extraordinary. She was kind and generous in her greeting, taking a few moments to visit and answer occasional questions. I also wrote my MA thesis on her work, so she inspired me as a scholar, as well as a writer.
- What makes you cringe?
Bad horror movies and missing deadlines.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
A little of both. I tend out outline major plot points, but if the story changes, as it frequently does, I’m always happy to remain flexible and let the characters drive the plot. I love how characters will often surprise even me through the twists and turns of a novel.
- Is there a word you love to use?
I also like the word amethystine. It describes a lovely shade of purple.
