About Zara:

Zara Quentin is the author of Airwoman, the first book in the Airwoman series. She was raised in Adelaide, Australia, with one younger sister. Zara grew up with a strong sense of adventure, which she inherited from her parents, who took her and her sister on trips to the United States, Europe, and Asia.

She also inherited a love of reading from her mother. Throughout her childhood she explored fictional places through books, and in particular, through fantasy novels. She’d turn the black and white text on the page into the colourful worlds of her imagination.

After graduating from high school, Zara studied at the University of Adelaide and has lived in France, London, and Auckland, New Zealand. She is always determined to fit in as much travel as possible, spending time in Europe, the United States, southern Africa, Morocco, Peru, the Pacific and south-east Asia.

Zara now resides in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and three children. She is currently working on the next instalment in the Airwoman series.

  1. What is on your nightstand?

My lamp, my mobile phone (usually charging), some perfume, an inspirational mug (“She believed she could, so she did”), a 2018 calendar of brain games (which was given to me for Christmas and I haven’t yet used), several pictures that my kids have made for me, and my writers notebook. Next to my nightstand (because I have no more room on it) is my laptop as well as a pile of paperback books that I’m either reading or planning to read. Though honestly, most of my books are on my mobile phone in ebook form!

  1. What author would you totally fan?

There are several authors who I totally fan! One of them is Elise Kova, one of my favorite indie/hybrid authors (author of the Air Awakens series, the Loom Saga and co-author of Society of Wishes). I admire the stories she tells as well as the way she interacts with her fans and is so professional about marketing her work. I like to keep updated with what books she’s putting out next, as well as finding inspiration for what she’s doing with her marketing.

I also follow Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series. I love her books and the way she engages with her (legion of) fans. She also puts out snippets or scenes of her work in progress. I’m always interested in the way authors keep fans interested in their next book, especially if it’s going to be a year or two away.

  1. What makes you cringe?

When I’m with a group of people and someone asks me about the story I’m currently working on. I’m never ready to talk about it. I either fob them off with a vague answer or my bumbled attempt at an explanation always makes it sound like the most boring thing ever—either way, I’m inwardly cringing and the conversation usually quickly moves on to other topics after that!

  1. Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?

I’m a plotter, so I plot out most of the scenes of the book before I start working on the first draft. Sometimes the drafts take a detour that I wasn’t expecting, and often I switch around scenes and add more detail as I go, but I usually have a pretty cohesive plan before I start.

  1. Is there a word you love to use?

I think superfluous words like ‘really’, ‘actually’ and ‘though’ are right up there…I usually cut out a heap of these while I’m editing!

This is a photo of Buster – my daughter was given Buster for her third birthday and he’s been much loved by the whole family. As you can see he’s a special breed of (stuffed) Labrador—he doesn’t bark, he doesn’t have a big (any!) appetite and he doesn’t need to be walked! One day, I’ll give into my kids pleading for the real thing…
