Three simple words were all it took to change their lives forever.
Losing a loved one is hard. Learning to survive in their absence? That’s even harder. For Gemma Michaels, life had become difficult following her brother’s death, but the one thing that kept her afloat was the one thing she knew she shouldn’t have desired – her best friend, Ben.
He’d made a promise to her brother – to protect her, no matter what. For Ben, that had meant that she was off limits. But then she slips and tells him the three words he’s been waiting to hear.
Love happens when you least expect it.

PLAYLIST
The Song List for Collide #1:
Music plays a vital role in my writing process, and this was no different for the Collide series – especially given the series was inspirited by a Howie Day song. So, without further ado, here is the complete playlist for Collide #1.
One Direction “Why Don’t We Go There?” – Gemma and Ben’s relationship is a tricky one. They’re best friends and both happen to be in love with one another, but they’re afraid to admit it. For me, this song perfectly captures when they finally decide to cross that line.
Howie Day “Collide” – When I wrote Collide, I was in an admittedly dark place dealing with some things in my own life. I’d been down and was looking to write something that was the exact opposite of how I felt, but still captured some of what I’d gone through. This song not only inspired the title series, but the dynamic between the lead characters.
One Direction “Through the Dark” – This one, like “Collide,” served as a huge inspiration for the story. While Gemma struggles to overcome her grief, she finds comfort in Ben, who serves as her light in the darkness.
One Direction “18” – I went through a big One Direction phase for this series, if you haven’t already figured that out. This song, however, was probably the one most played throughout the writing process. It just worked so well regarding the feelings Gemma and Ben had for each other since they were teenagers.
Ed Sheeran “Kiss Me” – Before I even began writing “Collide,” I’d envisioned the first kiss between the two leads and immediately set said scene to this song.
Ed Sheeran “This” – While most of the story is spent looking at whether Gemma and Ben are willing to cross that line, and potentially destroy their friendship, once they finally do get together, to me, it’s one of the most exciting parts of the story.
Incubus “Echo” – Trying to get in the proper headspace to write a romance can be difficult, thankfully, “Echo,” is the perfect song to draw inspiration from during writer’s block.
Matt Nathanson “Come On Get Higher” – This is my go to song when writing a romance, so it had to be included.
Taylor Swift “Mine” – Given all the crap relationships both Gemma and Ben experienced prior to getting together, for me, this song was how I envisioned them reacting once they finally crossed that line.
Taylor Swift “Sparks Fly” – This, for me, is Gemma’s song to Ben. It captures her feelings towards him, and the longing she feels from the get-go.
