When Cody, a troubled fourteen-year-old, witnesses a murder, she tells no one. But it begins a spiral for her from which she cannot escape. Her worried mother Skye thinks a change of scene is just what her introverted, withdrawn daughter needs and since her dream has always been to own an inn, she jumps at the chance to buy a dilapidated bed & breakfast in the Berkshires. But being an innkeeper is harder than it seems and Cody still seems to fall in with the wrong crowd. When Adam March arrives as the inn’s only guest, he is accompanied by his rescued pit bull, Chance, a dog who has saved Adam in more ways than one. Cody and Chance begin a wary bond and soon, Adam finds another rescue who needs the kind of attention he gave Chance years ago. With Adam and Skye beginning a tentative relationship and Chance showing Cody how to trust again, this new-found family seems to be on the brink of second chances. But soon, a murderer is closing in—someone hiding in plain sight, and threatening everything and everyone—even Cody’s life.

MY THOUGHT

When Skye decides to take follow her dreams and open a bed and breakfast in the Berkshires this means uprooting her fourteen-year-old daughter, Cody and moving from the only home they have known.  As she starts at a new school, Cody says the wrong thing to one of the popular girls and she is immediately shunned.  The only left for Cody is her artwork but with money tight, lessons are not affordable.  There is an art colony in the next town and Cody finds that she can trade menial tasks for lessons.  The only friend that Cody has attracted is a girl nicknamed Black Holly, who is not a very nice person and is only out to use the vulnerable teen.

Since Skye works constantly and expects Cody to help out, she really isn’t on top of what is going on in Cody’s life as she should be.  Cody’s father was murdered right before they moved and this has left Cody with feelings of dread.  As the pair move through their new life and try to build up business, they take on a new guest who is traveling with his rescue dog, Chance.  Adam is consulting at the art colony and finds the situation with Cody there isn’t really as above board as it should be.  One night, Chance takes off and rescues another dog which is promptly named Lucky.  Lucky and Chance are both pit bulls and Adam suspects the Lucky was fought.

I felt so bad for Cody and that her coming together with Lucky was giving her a second chance at her own life, especially when she meets up with Lucky’s owner, a boy who is in a rehab center close by.  She seems to be a good person at heart but is so confused and in fear from her father’s murder that she isn’t honest with herself or her mother when she should be. Of course, the translates into even more trouble for the teen.  Adam and Skye are developing feelings for each other and he is spending more time at the inn.

The story is told from multiple viewpoints and it all leads to a very thrilling ride as the story closes around Cody and her father’s murderer.  Even the dogs get in on the act and we learn what the dogs are thinking which Wilson pulls off quite nicely.  Overall, I really enjoyed the story and it reminded me a bit of Chris Bohjalian.

One of my favorite fiction dog books is an old one, The Voice of Bugle Ann. Although i found it very sad too. I also like reading books like The Scent of the Missing, and The Other End of the Leash. And Thunder Dog was about a seeing eye dog at the attack on 9/11.
