Out of darkness and danger
You can’t hide your secrets from Lathan Montgomery—he can read your darkest memories. And while his special abilities are invaluable in the FBI’s hunt for a serial killer, he has no way to avoid the pain that brings him. Until he is drawn to courageous, down-on-her-luck Evanee Brown and finds himself able to offer her something he’s never offered another human being: himself.
Dawns a unique and powerful love
Nightmares are nothing new to Evanee Brown. But once she meets Lathan, they plummet into the realm of the macabre. Murder victims are reaching from beyond the grave to give Evanee evidence that could help Lathan bring a terrifying killer to justice. Together, they could forge an indomitable partnership to thwart violence, abuse, and death—if they survive the forces that seek to tear them apart.

WHAT IS ON ABBIE’S NIGHTSTAND?
-A box of tissues. I have allergies.
-A stick of lip balm. I can’t sleep if my lips are dry.
-Earplugs. My husband occasionally snores—waking him up to tell him to roll over and kicking him doesn’t always work. So sometimes I’m forced to use earplugs.
-Hair elastics and bobby pins. I usually have my hair up and out of my face when I’m at home. But I don’t like to sleep with it up and always forget to take it down until I get in bed.
-A bottle of water. I get thirsty in the night.
-My heater control. A few years ago my husband got me a heated mattress cover for Christmas. OMG! It’s my favorite thing! On cold winter nights I crank that puppy on High about fifteen minutes before I get in bed and oh… The luxury of getting into a cozy warm bed. I love it so much!
-My cell phone. I listen to audiobooks as I fall asleep. And when I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t sleep because my brain has decided it wants to think a bunch of random thoughts… I listen to podcasts to give it only one topic to think about and then usually I’m able to fall back to sleep.
-Earbuds. So I can listen to audiobooks and podcasts without waking up my husband.
AND NOW – ON TO THE SILLY QUESTIONS!
What author would you totally fan?
Here’s how it would go if I saw him…
I’d pretend I didn’t see him.
I would force myself to not stare.
I would act completely normal.
He would think I’m a snob. Not because I’m a snob, but because I’m an introvert. And for my deeply introverted self to engage with someone of his magnitude—I just couldn’t do it! I would be too embarrassed, too tongue-tied, too ready to pee myself. But for some reason when my introvert shy side gets activated people think I’m acting snobby. I’m really just super shy in those moments.
But inside I would be totally flipping out that I’d be sharing the same space as Stephen freaking King! That I would be in the same room at the same time as him. To hear his voice in person. It would be so danged cool.
What makes you cringe?
Maybe I don’t cringe, but I roll my eyes whenever a character bites their lip. For a while it seemed like every female character bit their lip. Yeah, I know it’s a real-ish action. I bite my lip too sometimes. Maybe my issue is the way it’s always worded the same. Maybe if a writer really got into describing it in a super different way I wouldn’t roll my eyes. But as of now, that’s one of those things you’ll probably never find in my manuscript. Now watch—I’ll say that and someone will find one!
Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I’m a-go-with-the-flow girl. I never plot things out. If I did I, wouldn’t want to write the book because I’d already know what happened! I love the surprise of not knowing and discovering the story along with my characters. So many fun twists and turns happen this way. Moments where I sit back, stare at the computer screen and go “Damn. I can’t believe that just happened!”
But you know what’s weird? My go-with-the-flow writing style is the absolute opposite of how I live my life. I like things planned out. Organized. I might even admit to being a bit of a control freak.
Is there a word you love to use?
I love the word ethereal. I just love the way it rolls off the tongue. I love the sound of it in my ears. I love what it means.
I think I find a way to slip it into every manuscript at least once, probably more than once. Okay. Now I have to go check my manuscripts and see if it really is in there. Be right back…
Yep. I found it!
From Race the Darkness: In an ethereal dream beyond time, her skin was gilded by firelight, her eyes devoid of sadness and fear, her body whole and healthy.
From Hunt the Dawn: Some ethereal part of himself entered her and began to repair all her hurts and her coolness flowed into him, swirled in his blood, soothing the ache in his balls, the burn of his split lip.
From Saving Mercy: The steady pumping of blood slowed and that ethereal thing that gave life—dimmed, faded, and vanished.
Now I’m curious…
What’s on your nightstand?
