I had such a wonderful time at the premier of MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN on Thursday, September 8.

 

I was able to watch Tim Burton put his handprints into cement for the famous TLC CHINESE THEATER which was really amazing! Wynona Ryder introduced Tim Burton and it was amazing how close I was to the whole ceremony.

 

 

 

The film was amazing and reflected the book perfectly!  I can’t wait to share my complete thoughts on the release date.

I totally fan girled Tahereh Mafi and apologize to her husband Ransom Riggs.  That is me in the middle!

I really want to thank everyone at 20th Century Fox for including me in this event.  It was truly once in a lifetime for me.

MY THOUGHTS

 

Jake is pretty much left on his own while his parent follow their own dreams and he tends to relate to his grandfather, Abe, and the strange pictures he brings to life with stories.  Abe insists these peculiar people are real and that he didn’t hunt Nazis during World War II, but dark characters that want to kill the peculiars.  No one in Jake’s family believes his grandfather but when the creature that Abe has warned about actually attacks and kills him, Jake starts to unravel Abe’s history.  After meeting with Dr. Golen (now female) tries to help Jake overcome his grief, she suggests that Jake travel to the island where Abe lived during the Blitz.

Traveling to the island, Jake meets two local boys (this part is a bit truncated from the book), who help him find the bombed out children’s home.  He finally makes his way and meets Emma, the girl whose letter Jake finds tucked away in a book. It is here that Tim Burton comes alive in true form.  Weird things materialize in the children and home, the strange things in the book truly come to life.  In true Burton fashion, Samuel A. Jackson does a stupendous job as Barron that is a bit reminiscent of Beetlejuice. The connection between Emma and Jake is perfect.  Miss Peregrine is portrayed younger but again, it is a great match in character.

The movie is really stunning and does a good job bringing to life all the pertinent parts of the book.  If you are looking for a literal retelling, you might be a bit disappointed but overall, all the essence of the story remains intact.  Jake’s adolescence is condensed into a few key scenes and his friend in high school is replaced by his manager at the drug store to make the plot move more quickly.  All of the peculiars are intact but there are few small changes.  One thing I can’t figure out is why the date of the time reset was changed from 1940 to 1943.  In 1940, there was an actual air raid on a Welsh island, so it makes no sense to me.  I hope someone can help me pinpoint that detail.

Parents: This is one movie that you will want to see yourself.  It has a few intense scenes, so kids younger than 10 might have issues with some of the cartoon violence on screen.
