ABOUT THE BOOK
Manhattan has many secrets. Some are older than the city itself.
The city sleeps. Selene DiSilva walks her dog along the banks of the Hudson. She is alone—just the way she likes it. She doesn’t believe in friends, and she doesn’t speak to her family. Most of them are simply too dangerous.
In the predawn calm, Selene finds the body of a young woman washed ashore, gruesomely mutilated and wreathed in laurel. Her ancient rage returns. And so does the memory of a promise she made long ago—when her name was Artemis.
“The Immortals is a lively re-imagining of classical mythology with an engaging premise, a page-turning plot, and an eye for the arresting and uncanny in contemporary urban life.” ―Deborah Harkness, New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches
“Brodsky’s writing has claws…They sink in with the first word and don’t let go until you are finished with the book.” ―Darynda Jones, New York Times bestselling author
“Irresistible…a page-turner that deftly weaves action, romance, and a dash of intellectual heft into one seamless whole.” ―Dustin Thomason, New York Times bestselling author
“Plays with more modern mythology, employing New York’s own secret places and storied history to great effect. This intelligent, provocative fantasy breathes exciting new life into old, familiar tales.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Selene (AKA Artemis, Defender of the Innocents) still keeps a few of the old ways of her kind. While walking her dog (Hippo!), late one night in New York, she stumbles upon a dead body dressed in old Greek fashion, which she recognizes as the work of an ancient cult. Theo, a professor who knows the dead woman, becomes an excellent foil for Selene and helps discover who killed her. The story is the start of a trilogy and part mystery / thriller based on characters of Greek Mythology.
I have been waiting for something along this lines since Gods Behaving Badly, although this story is more serious but still has a bit of snark in the form of Theo and even Selene at times. The pacing is excellent and I wasn’t able to jump ahead and solve the puzzle until the right time. The writing is just so perfect and matches the intensity of the story. GAH! I wish I could describe it better.
After reading so many young adult versions of these gods, it is wonderful to finally find something more adult and age appropriate for me. Especially the parts where Selene has to adapt to her aging body, yet her mind is still young and fresh, but she conveys a world-weary attitude that is hard to capture. I now can’t wait for the next installment to be released.
