An outrageously stylish, wickedly funny novel of fashion in the digital age, The Knockoff is the story of Imogen Tate, editor in chief of Glossy magazine, who finds her twentysomething former assistant Eve Morton plotting to knock Imogen off her pedestal, take over her job, and reduce the magazine, famous for its lavish 768-page September issue, into an app.

When Imogen returns to work at Glossy after six months away, she can barely recognize her own magazine. Eve, fresh out of Harvard Business School, has fired “the gray hairs,” put the managing editor in a supply closet, stopped using the landlines, and hired a bevy of manicured and questionably attired underlings who text and tweet their way through meetings. Imogen, darling of the fashion world, may have Alexander Wang and Diane von Furstenberg on speed dial, but she can’t tell Facebook from Foursquare and once got her iPhone stuck in Japanese for two days. Under Eve’s reign, Glossy is rapidly becoming a digital sweatshop—hackathons rage all night, girls who sleep get fired, and “fun” means mandatory, company-wide coordinated dances to Beyoncé. Wildly out of her depth, Imogen faces a choice—pack up her Smythson notebooks and quit, or channel her inner geek and take on Eve to save both the magazine and her career. A glittering, uproarious, sharply drawn story filled with thinly veiled fashion personalities, The Knockoff is an insider’s look at the ever-changing world of fashion and a fabulous romp for our Internet-addicted age

MY THOUGHTS

What a way to kick off the summer read-a-thon!

Imogen is old-school, and like many of us, feel that Facebook can’t replace a face-to-face. When she returns from a six month leave, she finds her tech-savvy assistant, Eve, at her desk and in charge, she realizes that she must either fight or flight.  Eve now has control of the glossy magazine and has changed it into an app.  Yes, the younger audience is eating it up, but Imogen realizes that a huge portion in left behind.  This is what The Devil Wore Prada is all about, girls! Fun and backstabbing with lots of fashion.  YES!

I know Eve, have met many incarnations of her and still don’t like her, but like an accident, you can’t look away.  You want to see if she will truly ever get a clue that life doesn’t revolve around selfies, hastags and social interactions on line or that her Harvard business degree didn’t buy you common sense.  Imogen is the patient one, she knows she still has a lot left in her and can easily learn what she needs to adapt to new situations.  I am probably seeing this story from Imogen’s point of view, since I am, um, older.  But, it is hard to belive that she hasn’t never been involved with social media at all.

I can’t wait for this book to become a movie.  The clothes, the locations, the mess will be fun to behold.  I am just afraid that it has now been done before.  Please let this be the first book of many more from these authors.  I adore a good, fun read like this.

This summer, I would like to read Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. I enjoyed Slaughterhouse 5, but hadn’t gotten around to reading anything else that he wrote.
