"A huge warm saga . . . A deeply satisfying story written with love and confidence." --Maeve Binchy in The New York Times Book Review

For the first time ever in trade paperback, Rosamunde Pilcher's beloved, #1 New York Times bestselling novel--a captivating story of life and love.

An instant bestseller when it was first published, The Shell Seekers is an enduring classic which has touched the hearts of millions of readers worldwide. A novel of connection, it is the story of one family--mothers and daughters, husbands and lovers--and of the passions and heartbreak that have held them together for three generations. This magical novel--the kind of reading experience that comes along only once in a long while--is the perfect read, whether you are returning to it again, or opening the cover for the first time.

At the end of a long and useful life, Penelope Keeling's prized possession is The Shell Seekers, painted by her father, and symbolizing her unconventional life, from bohemian childhood to wartime romance. When her grown children learn their grandfather's work is now worth a fortune, each has an idea as to what Penelope should do. But as she recalls the passions, tragedies, and secrets of her life, she knows there is only one answer...and it lies in her heart.

Author Info:

ROSAMUNDE PILCHER has had a long and distinguished career as a novelist and short-story writer, but it was her phenomenally successful novel The Shell Seekers that captured the hearts of all who read it and won her international recognition as one of the most-loved storytellers of our time.  The Shell Seekers was followed by September and then by Coming Home and Winter Solstice, which also became worldwide bestsellers.  She lives in Perthshire, Scotland.

MY THOUGHTS

When I was a young teen and super bored during summer, my mom started me off reading with Gone with the Wind  and over the years, we constantly shared books back and forth.  The Shell Seekers is one of those books that became a favorite between us.  Even though this book clocks in at over five hundred pages, it was a quick and delightful read.  Pilcher has a way of making characters interesting and I think this book inspired (or reinforced) my love of gardening. I remember wanting to move to the beach and have an enormous garden after reading this one. I did both!

The story follows Penelope, recently recovering from a heart attack, retelling her life and relationships with her parents as well as her two children.  Slices of her life are presented and explain why things turned out the way they did and give view points from all of the parties involved.  The Shell Seekers, a painting by her father, is the key element that links everyone together and moves the story along. Of course, this is a sweeping family drama, a perfect soap opera of epic proportions which make it the perfect summer read and now that it has a cover to match the season, it easily goes to the beach with you.

This brings back memories! I read it eons ago–those sweeping sagas were the stuff summer afternoons were made of! A co-worker lent me Winter Solstice a couple years ago and I really liked it too.
