Banned Book Week Giveaway Hop #Win $10

September 20, 2014 By Mary

Banned Book Week Giveaway Hop!

banned book week 2014

The week of 9.21.14 through 9.27.14 is set aside to bring notice to a growing trend in public and school libraries — pulling literature from circulation based on the actions of a few, not the majority of the public.  Since 1982, the American Library Association has put together campaigns to make everyone aware of the circumstances of this form of censorship.  Some of the books banned are for minor issues like language that was once accepted but is now objectionable.  Instead of personal responsibility, these censors wish to impose their beliefs on everyone.  You can read more about this important week at the BANNED BOOK WEEK site.

I don’t believe in censorship of any media.  I think it is a parents’ place to make sure their children are consuming appropriate materials.  I don’t want someone else telling me what is right for my child, nor do I want to tell anyone what is acceptable for their family.  I let my son read, watch, listen to anything he wanted with a few important guidelines in place.  I reviewed and discussed with him the media he was consuming.  He turned out more advanced, making better choices and incredibly responsible for those decisions.

Bc like the author said, the parents are the responsible teach to their children build positive and negative criteria on how to choose a book and qualify according to their tastes but also the mental and social impact it may generate for and with their environment.

I’ve just been reading through some of the banned/challenged book lists, and it is ridiculous how many books are banned/for what reasons! Especially the older books as they were written in a completely different time – how are kids supposed to learn?

As I’m reading through the comment on this posts I am literally left speechless. I knew many of the classics that were challenged but I’m actually just now realizing that it’s not just classics that get challenged but children and young adult books too. I mean, I remember reading Captain Underpants in elementary school and I can’t imagine not having those memories of me laughing my butt off while reading them. It’s so sad that some people would go as far as to want to take away the enjoyment of something from someone.

I guess I would like to, if I have the chance, buy The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian or Catcher in the Rye.
