Elisabeth Staab still lives with her nose in a book and at least one foot in an imaginary world. 1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?
Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. Later I graduated to Agatha Christie. I think I was nine, and I would do that classic pull up the blankets and read with the flashlight maneuver. Because of course the blankets kept you from being killed by any lurking murderers who might be in your home (or from your parents noticing the flash-lit lump under the bed).
2. What are you reading right now?
I’m reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. About 90% of the time I read romance, and this definitely isn’t romance. So far (I’m about halfway through) my assessment is it’s sort of like The Wonder Years but sadder. It’s a really tough book for anybody who struggled in high school—and that’s most of us. Every once in awhile I force myself to read something outside my comfort zone so this is the book I chose for that, this go-round. The writing is really gripping and fantastic, and it puts me right back in high school, which is what makes it difficult to read.
3. How does your garden grow?
Oh, it really doesn’t. I mean, speaking literally? I can’t grow a damn thing. It’s a recurring joke around here that it’s a good thing kids and pets know how to pipe up and say something when they’re hungry. My middle child has already shown an interest in cooking. I suspect it’s borne of self-preservation. 😉
4. What is the last thing you Googled?
Angry Birds cake pops. I’m entertaining the insanity of making some for my kid’s birthday party.
5. What makes you cringe?
Very little makes me cringe because very little surprises me anymore. Things like animal and child abuse, because I can never see a reason. Human rights inequality. That’s a big one for me.

I had to laugh at the garden not growing comment. Even in my veggie garden it is survival of the fittest sometimes. 🙂
