Emily Greenwood worked for a number of years as a writer, crafting newsletters and fundraising brochures, but she far prefers writing playful love stories set in Regency England, and she thinks romance is the chocolate of literature. Hello, and thanks so much for having me here today to celebrate the release of MISCHIEF BY MOONLIGHT! I love coming to a place that’s so excited about books J
So, how’s the writing life?
It’s not always a pretty sight, lol! For me, at least, because there’s often lots of angst mingled with the pleasure of creating. For instance, for weeks while working on MISCHIEF BY MOONLIGHT, I sat down at the computer every day in despair. Why, why, WHY, I would ask myself, did I say I would write a story with a love potion in it?
MISCHIEF BY MOONLIGHT is the last book in my Mischief series, and each of the stories has had a little element of mischief that the characters were involved in. I won’t say writing the other two books, A LITTLE NIGHT MISCHIEF and GENTLEMEN PREFER MISCHIEF, was a breeze, but putting the mischief element in the final book made me want to pull my hair out, at least initially.
After all, I don’t want my characters to be ninnies, and what educated, likeable heroine would truly believe that a love potion would be of any use at all in matters of the heart? I like some whimsy in my stories, but I also want them to feel real. So even if a person in the 19th century who wanted to win a loved one might have turned to some kind of elixir or aphrodisiac, readers today know that oysters and chocolate aren’t really going to have much effect on someone’s passion. And since I wasn’t trying to write a story with a magic potion in it, where did that leave me?
Fortunately, I found some information suggesting that hallucinogens were sometimes used in love potions, and after some more pondering, I finally had a workable plot. By the time I typed “The End,” I was actually really happy I’d decided to use the love potion!
I hope readers will have as much fun reading the book as I had writing it—in the end J
What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?
One of the first books I remember reading was a Nancy Drew mystery, The Clue in the Old Clock. I know I read a lot of other books prior to age eight or nine, when I would have read the Nancy Drew, but they kind of blur together. A lot of writers have amazing memories and can recall things distinctly from the early years of their childhood—sadly, I’m not one of them.
But I’ll never forget the Nancy Drew books. I loved the settings, the suspenseful titles with their mysterious candles and jewels and diaries. And the covers—I loved imagining I was right there with Nancy, dressed in a cute pair of pedal pushers and riding around in a convertible with important work to do.

Three Weeks with Lady X by Eloisa James. So good!

How does your garden grow?
It’s got a lot of weeds. Maybe when my kids go off to college, I’ll get a chance to whip the garden into shape again.

What is the last thing you Googled?
A chicken salad recipe.  

What makes you cringe?
School and camp forms, ants in the kitchen, some of the music my kids listen to.
