About Linda Poitevin

Linda Poitevin was born and raised in B.C., Canada’s westernmost province. Growing up in an era when writing was “a nice hobby, dear, but what are you going to do for a living?”, Linda worked at a variety of secretarial jobs before applying to be a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Due to an error in measurement, however, she was turned down when she didn’t meet the height requirement of that time. Undeterred, Linda became a civilian member in the force and was a dispatcher for two and a half years, during which time she met her husband, a police officer.
Following their transfer to Ottawa, Linda went on to become a real estate agent and then a human resources consultant before starting a family. She remained a stay-at-home mom, homeschooled her youngest daughter for nine years and, now that she has realized writing can be more than a nice hobby, she continues to live her dream of being a cop vicariously through her characters.
Linda currently lives near Ottawa with her husband, youngest of three daughters, one very large husky/shepherd/Great Dane-cross dog, a cat, two rabbits, and a bearded dragon lizard. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found in her garden or walking her dog along the river or through the woods.

My Unofficial Writing Partner
The life of a writer can be very sedentary…dangerously so, if one isn’t paying attention. I swear my butt could grow roots onto my office chair some days.
Fortunately, I have this to ensure that doesn’t happen:

Meet Charlie, my faithful companion of the last 4 years, alternatively (and affectionately) known as Charlie-horse because of his size: he’s 127 lbs and can cruise the countertops without stretching. I’m pretty sure the neighbors also thought for a while that his name was Jesus Dog, because that was how I inevitably greeted him at the back door after he’d dug another hole in my yard—and after he tried to walk across water via the pool’s solar cover and needed to be rescued before he drowned. *sigh*

Charlie is part husky, part shepherd, and part great Dane. Roughly translated, this means that not only is he big, he also requires a fair bit of exercise. Which is where I come in…and why I’m not about to grow roots to my chair anytime soon. While he’s a little more forgiving now that he’s older and more settled (I can skip the occasional walk), we still hit the trails several times a week. In Ottawa, we’re blessed with miles and miles of groomed walking trails running along the river and through dedicated greenbelt areas, and Charlie and I have explored many of them.
Walking with Charlie also comes with several bonuses.
1. Upper body strength-building: Charlie is a champion stick-fetcher and fully expects me to hurl the ones he brings to me.

2. Year-round exercise: because he’s part husky, our -38C/-34F winter temperatures don’t phase him in the least. I’ve learned to dress accordingly.

3. Real-life research opportunities: Charlie has made sure I have first-hand knowledge of what rotting dead things smell like. (You do not want to know what was embedded along with the grass caught in his collar on this occasion.)

4. A connection to what’s real and important in life…because when there’s this much joy to be found in simple sticks and water? Yeah, that has a way of keeping you grounded. 🙂
