BANNED BOOK GIVEAWAY HOP !

September 21, 2013 By Mary

Banned Book Week Giveaway Hop!

The week of 9.22.13 through 9.28.13 is set aside to bring notice to a growing trend in public and school libraries — pulling literature from circulation based on the actions of a few, not the majority of the public.  Since 1982, the American Library Association has put together campaigns to make everyone aware of the circumstances of this form of censorship.  Some of the books banned are for minor issues like language that was once accepted but is now objectionable.  Instead of personal responsibility, these censors wish to impose their beliefs on everyone.  You can read more about this important week at the BANNED BOOK WEEK site.

I don’t believe in censorship of any media.  I think it is a parents’ place to make sure their children are consuming appropriate materials.  I don’t want someone else telling me what is right for my child, nor do I want to tell anyone what is acceptable for their family.  I let my son read, watch, listen to anything he wanted with a few important guidelines in place.  I reviewed and discussed with him the media he was consuming.  He turned out more advanced, making better choices and incredibly responsible for those decisions.

I think it’s fantastic that you stand up against this awful practice of banning books. Thank you.

There doesn’t seem to be any consistency in the banned books. I was informed that our local high school are reading Shades of Grey!!
I do think the library should stock what the public want, after all it is paid for with our tax dollars.

Cozy — why on earth would HS students be reading those books unless it is to teach them how not to write a trashy novel. There are far better books than this series. I was hoping they were banned because they are poorly written trash, not because of the content. You can see why I didn’t review them LOL! I bet those kids just want to see what the fuss is all about and I bet they are disappointed.

Thank you for the giveaway. I would like to read the book and see what all the fuss is about- though I’ve heard it isn’t much.

I do think that there should be a book rating like in movies where parents can monitor what their children are reading. I was a mature reader as a young teenager but I know a lot of readers aren’t ready to handle the information coming from what they’re reading. A book rating that lets readers and parents know what kind of content they can find in a book would be helpful. This would have kept me from reading several books and being horrifyingly shocked at some of the graphic information I was reading.

This is a cool giveaway. I think it is ridiculous that any reading material is banned. The books should be located in age appropriate places. I would be shocked to see Shades of Grey in my kids school (ages 12, 13, &16). Ultimately it is up to the parents to allow a child to read something like that.

Banning books tends to close minds, instead of fostering understanding. I always stick with one simple rule: If you, as an adult, don’t want to read it, don’t, but don’t tell me what I can read. However, the responsibility falls on me, as the parent, to monitor my children’s reading.

Like you describe with your son, my mom always let me pick what I was going to read and had the opinion that I would ask questions if I needed to. I really do believe that made me a more critical and advanced reader. I love the idea that children should pick what suits them and their family.

  48. Cindi says

    September 22, 2013 at 5:29 pm

Excellent choice of subject for a blog hop!! I believe that authors should use their discretion when writing for certain age groups and parents should discuss age-appropriate book choices with their children. If this is done, there’s no reason to ban a book ever. Although technically, most books that have been banned were simply not taking the same political or religious viewpoint that certain groups didn’t like. Basically, political banning. This should never happen.

I hate the idea of banning books. I get that some are very controversial and maybe out of people’s comfort zones. But, it’s fiction.

I do see how banning certain books in schools would be appropriate, as many parents would not want their children exposed to them.

I can’t believe books are still being banned.

I love this idea, it is amazing. One of my most favorite books is a banned book and is about burning books. I make it my personal mission to read banned books every year!
