BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY – GEORGETTE HEYER @sourcebooks

August 3, 2012 By Mary 37 Comments

I am so excited to host this wonderful celebration of Georgette Heyer’s birthday! I have enjoyed her books through out the years since when I was a teen, my local library had a great collection of her work.  The librarian there clued me into them and thought I would really enjoy them since I devoured the Victoria Holt selections.  Here is a bit about Georgette from Goodreads:

Georgette Heyer (from Goodreads)

born
August 16, 1902 in The United Kingdom

died
July 04, 1974

gender
female

genre
Romance, Literature & Fiction, Mystery & Thrillers

About this author

Georgette Heyer was an amazingly prolific writer who created the Regency England genre of romance novels.

Georgette Heyer was an intensely private person. A best-seller all her life without the aid of publicity, she made no appearances, never gave an interview, and only answered fan letters herself if they made an interesting historical point. Heyer wrote very well-researched historical fiction, full of all you could ever want: romance, fashion, upper classes, cross-dressing, arranged marriages, murder, intrigue, cant language, sarcasm and humour!

Walk into any second-hand bookshop and they will know her name and may even know that she wrote her third book under the pseudonym of Stella Martin. In fact, you usually find that many people have read at least one of her books.

Check out the Georgette Heyer Facebook page HERE for more specials, giveaways and special events!

I have only read a few of her mysteries, but keep meaning to delve into more. I first heard about her via some friends in the Betsy-Tacy Society, years ago. That is a society devoted to lovers of the Betsy Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace, and often, there is carry over to other ‘forgotten’ books.

I’ve never read a Georgette Heyer book. I think I’d start with “Devil’s Cub” because it sounds interesting, and apparently has a rather strong willed young woman in it.
Thank you for introducing me to her work.

Georgette Heyer whom I learned about when I was perusing books in a used bookstore and looking for historicals and mysteries that I would enjoy. Her historical romances and thrillers are equally appealing for me. One that I would love to read is The Unfinished Clue. It sounds riveting. elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com

A friend of mine always carried a Georgette Heyer book with her and I started reading them when I worked in London and traveled by train in the 60s. This seems to be a good time to start reading them again.

My first Heyer was Cousin Kate when my mother brought it home for me to read when I was 11. I loved it, but never found any other Heyers for a long time. Then at 16, I discovered that my best friend’s grandmother had a *huge* collection, and began borrowing them three at a time. I always say that’s why she became my best friend. =)

I discovered Georgette Heyer when my mother brought one of her romances home from the library more than 40 years ago. I’ve been hooked ever since. Her mysteries are great too. Thank you so much for the wonderful giveaway.

I actually discovered her in my local library while in HS. I would go after school and just browse the stacks. She was among my favorites in HS when I devoured her, Barbara Cartland, Victoria Holt etc.

I’ve only read a few of the mysteries that I picked up at the library after my aunt suggested her books. I asked my aunt who some of her favorite mystery authors were and Georgette Heyer was the first one she suggested. My aunt was tragically killed in a car accident right after I read the first Georgette Heyer book so I was never able to discuss it with her however I am grateful she suggested her as an author.

Georgette Heyer’s books were some of the first I read as a moved away from children’s books (and I won’t say how many years ago that was). I found my box of books that had been packed away for many years and thought I should re-read them, but I know I don’t have all of them.

I discovered Georgette Heyer through these great re-issues that Sourcebooks has been putting out recently. I read my first of her work last year, and I was hooked! Her style really reminds me of Jane Austen– so classy. I haven’t read any of her “modern” books yet, and I’m looking forward to it.

    Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

I have never read a Georgette Heyer but book I have had numerous friends tell me that I absolutely MUST read one of her books. I tried looking on Amazon one day and there were so many that I got lost trying to pick one out and; therefore, have no clue where to start. Maybe you or some of your readers would have some suggestions?

    Thanks,

I am not sure just when I first heard of her. I think I remember hearing her name brought up a lot as a romance novelist, and perhaps later on as a Jane Austenesque writer. I remember I was bored, in a deep reading funk, and that was one of the names I researched for new authors to try, and I picked up Sylvester, or the Wicked Uncle and haven’t looked back since!

I started reading her books in the late 60’s and read a few but don’t remember which ones. I do remember at library I would go to her books if I wanted a romance/historical before I found other authors. She was a great author and her books will be read forever.

After reading and loving Jane Austen’s books I asked my sister about other good Regency books. She recommended Georgette Heyer and loaned me her own favorite novel of Heyer’s, Devil’s Cub. I loved it and have read several others, as well as, collecting them when I run across them.
