1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?
I don’t know if it was the first, but a picture book called HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME stands out in memory. It was based on a folktale from Africa or Indonesia–some place that would’ve seemed exotic to child fifty years ago–about three creatures (a monkey, a pig and I forget the third) who make a bet with a stranger to see which of them can tell the tallest tale. Being a storyteller now, this story is near and dear to my heart. I think I started reading by myself when I was pretty young because my mother, who is Japanese, didn’t read English and my father wasn’t one for books, but somehow I devoured a lot of picture books.
2. What are you reading right now?
I’m reading HIDE ME AMONG THE GRAVES, Tim Powers’ latest novel, on my NOOK. I have BRING UP THE BODIES by Hilary Mantel waiting on my iPod. I adored WOLF HALL and can’t wait to get into this one, but I only listen to audiobooks on long car trips.
3. How does your garden grow?
If you mean my real garden, is grows rather poorly as I ignore the outdoors as much as possible. We only have a tiny bit of yard surrounding our house and it’s completely out of control. The next step is to move into a hotel and have no yard work whatsoever. (That’s my husband’s suggestion, by the way.)
4. What is the last thing you Googled?
I wish I could remember. It was something really esoteric. Before that, I was doing research on the Boxer Rebellion for a chapter in The Descent, the last book in the trilogy. I was shocked to find out that there’s a band called the Boxer Rebellion. They’re probably wildly popular, aren’t they? That’s how out of touch I am.
5. What makes you cringe?
Listening to myself speak.
